The Broadway Melody of 1929, often simply referred to as The Broadway Melody, is an American musical film and the first sound film to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. It is a pre-Code film that heralded the ascendance of the 'talkies' and the decline of the silent film era. Released in 1929, it stars Anita Page and Bessie Love, in a tale about the Broadway theater world.
